With the tiktok-ification of Christmas decorating we have visibility into people's festive homes like never before, explains Laura Styles, Yester Home's Resident Style Advisor. Decorators are constantly seeking new Christmas looks and ways to stand out from the crowd, which in result is steering us back to the festive interiors of the past. Taking inspiration from nostalgic 90s movies, traditional festive decor brings a sense of warmth and cosiness into our homes and is effortlessly timeless.
Laura Styles, shares her advice on why traditional festive movie decor is trending and how to achieve this look.

Red and Green Should Always be Seen

The more neutral white and green festive style which has become popular in recent years definitely has its merits, but red and green is a sumptuous and classic Christmas combination which will never go out of style. Team with soft, golden lighting, glass baubles and velvet ribbons for an elevated but familiar Christmas tree look. (Google searches for "Red Bows for Christmas Tree" +60% YoY)

Dashing Door Decorations

When you think of grand houses at Christmas, the Mccallister house always comes to mind with its welcoming, wreath-laden front door. No matter what your house style, make a strong festive first impression with a dash of front door decorating. Polish up your hardware, introduce a purse-friendly seasonal doormat and make the most of any greenery or foliage near your front door with twinkling lights, faux berries or striking bows. Commit to an olive green front door colour, which is a beautiful, grounding tone which can work all year round: pair with dusky pink decor in the spring and summer and burnt orange styling in the autumn.

Spruce Up your Kitchen

Of course it's not advisable to renovate your kitchen every time December rolls around. However, there is a lot to be said for an 'evergreen' and red kitchen scheme. Emerald green tiles are a stylish year-round choice, whether used sparingly on your splashback or as a practical worktop surface, pair with dusky pink cabinets or walls and introduce statement pops of red with painted furniture or skirting boards, which you can dial up or down depending on the season. In the full swing of the festive season you can bring in complementary decorative tea towels, storage baskets and decorations to keep the Christmas spirit cohesive throughout your home. In true Home Alone style, take a 'more the merrier' approach to countertop clutter, this isn't the season for minimalism.

Remember the Hearth of the Home

If you are blessed with a feature fireplace, make this the focus of the room instead of the TV this season. Opt for decorative stockings for all the family, instead of a decorative one or two, and introduce some fireplace accessories, such as a fire screen or companion set, to add a touch of traditional grandeur which can be enjoyed all year round.

Candlelight and thoughtful lighting choices are essential for creating a magical ambiance during the festive season. The soft glow of candles instantly brings warmth and intimacy to a room, making it feel inviting and cosy. Pair this with string lights draped over mantels, around windows, or intertwined with garlands for a touch of sparkle. Opt for dimmable lamps or warm-toned bulbs to enhance the atmosphere without overpowering the room. Mixing natural candlelight with subtle electric lighting allows you to create depth and highlight key decor elements, like a beautifully decorated Christmas tree or a festive dining table.
